Getting Perspective as a Manager or Executive
Never forget this lesson
If you’re always on the dance floor, you’ll never see the whole dance.
One of the most important leadership disciplines is this:
“𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐲.”
Managing teams means being close to them; in the day-to-day, in decisions, in problems, in execution. That part matters. A lot.
But it’s not enough.
👉 You also need to step up to the balcony. From there, you can:
- See the big picture
- Understand how all the pieces fit together
- Spot patterns, risks, and opportunities
- Make strategic decisions, not just reactive ones
💥 The problem?
Daily execution has a way of clouding perspective. Urgency replaces clarity. Motion replaces direction.
That’s why the hardest, and most important, leadership exercise is knowing when to be on the floor and when to step back.
Good managers dance well.
Great leaders know when to stop and look from above.
